Angel of Omens: Sybil has the equivalent of
Knowledge (Omens and Superstitions) (target number: 11) for any culture or
sub-group that she encounters. She also
can determine what omen an individual would find most significant.
It is, admittedly, a rather cynical Word for an
angel to have, and doubly so for a Servitor of Destiny. Or so a modern, Western human might think;
of course, a modern, Western human is predisposed to at least take seriously
things like the inherent rationality of the cosmos, the effective absence of
supernatural influence on daily life, the nonexistence of personified forces
for evil and other charming little absurdities. In point of fact, the universe was explicitly created by a deity
who then placed metaphysical entities to oversee it; they are currently facing
other metaphysical entities who are attempting to either conquer or destroy
said universe. Both groups are
obligated to be discreet about things when they try to influence humans not
aware of the War; it would be nice if the Host didn't have to be
obscure, but then again it would be nice if Lucifer hadn't decided to rebel,
yes?
Thus, Sybil.
If making a warning cryptic and deniable is the only option available -
and, yes, unfortunately, it quite often is - then it makes sense to make sure
that humanity is primed to take those warnings seriously. That means that the
Word must be defended and nurtured.
The Kyriotate has been doing both for only about three hundred years;
the job is a fairly risky one. Sybil is
moderately indifferent to that; what mostly concerns it is the possibility of
failure. It would much rather be
inconvenienced and successful than comfortable yet unsuccessful.
To be honest, Sybil is not very likeable. It is not cruel, or cold or even
particularly obnoxious, but the Kyriotate exhibits very little genuine warmth
or sympathy towards anyone. From its
point of view, such things are for either those without real duties, or those
who duties require them; Sybil is under no requirement to be exceedingly nice,
so it does not make a particular effort.
Of course, it is expected to be helpful and selfless, and that is fine -
the Kyriotate does not wish to Fall - but sentimentality is a distraction at
best and a danger at worst. Its fellow
angels respond by not involving Sybil in superfluous group activities, which
the Kyriotate honestly appreciates.
It's constantly busy, after all. It seems that there's always somebody
who wants it to pass along a message...
