Joshua remembers, dimly, the days before he first attempted to come into his own.
He always knew that there was something different about him. He was here to do something, something important, something good - but just what it was eluded him, and he spent most of his early life trying many things in the hope that he could thereby discover his purpose. One day, suddenly, he did: it was all suddenly so clear, so obvious. He was on the cusp of becoming something more than he was, and to symbolize and finalize it, he realized that he would have to cast away one of his names.
Unfortunately, he chose the wrong name.
Joshua realizes now how foolish that was. In his pride and unconscious arrogance, he naturally assumed that he was best served by fully embracing his surname, thus rejecting the one that his parents gave them in their unconscious wisdom. Deepest folly: for his surname meant - nothing. It was a mere designator, an arbitrary way of telling him from every other Joshua out there. By rejecting his real name, he rejected his humanity, which made his apotheosis meaningless.
The shock of this error drove him quite mad for the rest of his first life.
It wasn't a bad life, on the whole. Even if no one took him seriously, somehow, the more perceptive people that Joshua encountered in his life knew him for what he was, and gave him due honor. And, even in his weakened state, Joshua still tried to do what he could to help others. He was the kindliest and gentlest of madmen, and many people were happier for knowing him. And so he grew old in this state.
And so he died.
Death was clarifying, to say the least. As Joshua watched, bemused, as they carried his body away for Christian burial, he felt again his purpose rise up inside him. This time, he was wiser, and rejected instead his surname without rancor. He was Joshua now, and God had always been his salvation, just as He was for all his Creation. As this Truth settled upon him, Joshua could feel a new body form about him, and he stepped forward into the corporeal plane, fully alive once more.
In a saloon across the street, what appeared to be a young man with a sad, proud smile on his face suddenly sprayed the beer that he had bought in Joshua's memory halfway across the room.
The young man very quickly caught up with Joshua. The two looked at each other for a moment, the young man beckoned, and Joshua followed without a word. They both knew that they would be journeying for a while together.
Since then, Joshua has been the young man's companion in his journeys. At first, Joshua merely followed and watched as his guide went about his tasks. He met several others in this first stage of his new life. There was a small woman with a cloak as dark as night and eyes that could see through your soul. The young man spoke often with her, planning stratagems and subtleties and Just war. Then there was that young couple, barely out of their teens: Joshua could see his guide's features reproduced on the girl's face, and knew that she was his guide's daughter. He could also see something that looked strangely familiar in her eyes. The boy - well, the boy did not share the look, but the love for the girl shone through like a beacon.
There was even, once, a beautiful woman, mad like Joshua was once mad. After she had left, Joshua looked at his guide and saw the same pain and determination that Joshua felt. His guide - no, his friend - told him quietly that the woman's madness could be cured, but it would take long toil. Would Joshua be willing to lend his aid?
Joshua understands the pain behind madness all too well, and how it can keep you from your purpose. He agreed on the spot. As he did, he felt his determination grow to match his decision. His friend looked surprised ... yet oddly pleased.
Since then, he and his friend have been much far-reaching in their journey. They go everywhere on Earth, acting in ways that have become steadily more comprehensible to Joshua as the years go on. The cloaked lady and the couple (and when the girl appeared again, now more than what she was - so much, much more - Joshua's feeling of familiarity deepened) appear from time to time, giving what aid is needed. The two have also met other fellow travelers, ranging from silent and grim fighters to an old man with the second most wonderful hat in the world. Joshua has seen so much of humanity, by now, and the more he sees of them, the more he feels the deep, driving need to protect them. To, somehow, exemplify them.
When he told this to his friend, fumbling for maddeningly imprecise words, his friend smiled a deep and satisfied smile and told him to keep thinking about it. Someday, the words that he is looking for will come. Someday soon.
After all, his friend mused, Joshua's certainly getting excellent on the job training, whatever that means...
