Elaine... reinforces the narrative.
The Archangel of Lightning generally prefers to have
things go as planned, presuming of course that the plan was a good one. The methodology for the development and
evolution of corporeal life was considered a good plan, albeit one that did not
take into account the sudden influx of demonic entities dedicated to creating
Hell on Earth. Jean does not get
particularly exercised about species that go extinct due to natural factors,
but species extinction due to supernatural interference is a different issue,
and one of the few that he and Jordi will essentially agree upon.
Hence, Elaine and some of her assistants; their collective
task is to determine what species are at risk (or extinct) due to the machinations
of Hell. Once a species requiring
protection (or, perhaps, reintroduction) has been identified, Elaine's next
task is to work out a suitable defense.
This can range from quiet political action to a
This is a challenging, and very busy, time for
Elaine: on the one hand, human population (and, effectively, human sensor
technology) has shrunk the wilderness from which replacement specimens of
endangered species could be 'found'. On
the other, human technology is not quite
up to either reliable cloning techniques or significant genetic
manipulation. Once the latter occurs,
Elaine and her staff will be able to slip in any number of extinct species whose
DNA was 'luckily' preserved.
It should be noted that the Mercurian would be just
as committed to working to reestablish a rare species of beetle that was never
categorized by human beings as she is at saving the giant panda (although her
successful prosecution of the 1948 Panda War is still spoken of with some
respect, and not just in Heaven). By
Mercurian standards, Elaine is decidedly not humanocentric;
she fully accepts humanity's special nature and personally likes them, but she
doesn't share their prejudices.
