Echoes

These items have a very specialized origin: they appear as the result of any entity's soul-death on the corporeal plane. As far as anyone can tell, Echoes are the vestiges of the unique components of the slain entity's soul, transmuted into a corporeal form that evokes his, her or its life and tasks. If a Remnant is created at the same time, the Echo will materialize around or on it.

Echoes are sought out for two reasons: first, they have certain uses in Sorcery. In general, an authentic Echo should give a +1 to Alchemy or Enchantment rolls, or +2 to Summoning, provided that the Echo is of the proper Word or Band. A successful use will destroy the Echo. Second, priming an Echo with one Essence will essentially turn it into a relic/0, permitting it to be taken to the celestial plane. This may not seem too useful, except that, well, at least this way there's something to display on your wall ... or properly bury.

Below are typical Echoes, grouped by Superior. As a general rule, angelic and human Echoes tend to be more poignant than demonic ones; the universe apparently has its own opinions over which deaths are to be celebrated, and which are to be mourned.

Blandine

A multicolored, abstract glass sculpture of heartbreaking beauty and poignancy: there will always be at least one flaw or crack.

David

Scattered fragments of a small stone statue that still give a hint of exquisite, delicate gracefulness. The harder and stronger the angel was in life, the more delicate the fragments.

Dominic

A broken and battered set of scales, found wrapped in a torn and crumpled fragment of black fabric.

Eli

A toy kaleidoscope: anyone who looks inside will find that the internal mirrors have been cracked.

Gabriel

A flickering, solid candle: if left alone, it will burn down and gutter out within an hour. The runners of wax will form an intricate interlocking spiral.

Janus

A neat heap of glittering sand: if outdoors, a breeze will form within five minutes that will cause it to spiral up into the sky until it is lost to view.

Jean

A small burned-out chip or motherboard that has been half-melted by a sudden surge of power: the Echo will always have the faintest smell of ozone about it.

Jordi

Small scraps of fur or scales or feathers (depending on the Choir), most of which are at least daubed with blood.

Laurence

Fragments of white silk and satin; the largest fragment will have a discolored red cross stitched upon it.

Marc

A sudden shower of tarnished, faded coins (of the lowest local denomination): there are always exactly one hundred and ninety-eight of them.

Michael

Dozens of empty bullet casings, laid out in a crude approximation of War's sigil.

Novalis

A small pile of blackened, dried flower petals: their scent is never the same twice.

Yves

Long strips of paper, torn from a book, woven into a checkerboard pattern and folded over: inside the impromptu folder can be found a scrap of parchment with a short musical phrase written upon it.

Relievers

The fragments of a powder-blue eggshell: the faint hint of incense and sandalwood clings to the Echo.

Andrealphus

Torn strips from a pornographic magazine: the slightest breeze will scatter them in all directions.

Asmodeus

The remnants of a small notebook that was apparently set on fire: the writing inside will be perpetually just too faint or obscure to quite make out.

Baal

Any sort of weapon (usually the one favored by the demon in life): however, it will be damaged beyond hope of repair.

Beleth

A twisted, shattered figurine of sandstone or obsidian: an onlooker will still be able to make out features of unparalleled ugliness.

Belial

Four or five cinders of wood, cold to the touch: the slightest touch will turn them into a fine silvery ash, then mud.

Haagenti

A small paper bag that contains crumpled soda cans, balled-up fast food wrappers and empty condiment packages: if there is a garbage can within 5 yards of the Glutton's death, the Echo will materialize there.

Kobal

Several cheap novelties, all of which are no longer functional: especially common is a set of chattering teeth with a broken spring.

Kronos

A disassembled pocket watch: the glass face is cracked and there will always be too many pieces missing to reassemble the clock.

Lilith

A small scrap of paper with writing in ancient Hebrew upon it: the 'word' apparently inscribed there has no known meaning. This Echo always and only appears for Lilim, including Bright Lilim.

Malphas

Several different small items, all twisted together and fused (as if by some great heat).

Nybbas

A battered television set: the exact center of the screen will have a hole, apparently caused by the stone or brick inside.

Saminga

There is no physical Echo, per se - but something will grow on the spot, and will survive all attacks, poisons and attempts to kill it for the next year and a day.

Valefor

Echoes formed from the soul-death of a Servitor of Theft will always appear in another Diabolical form. There is no way to tell them apart from the genuine article.

Vapula

A rusty, pitted gear with broken teeth.

Imps/Gremlins

Fragments of pitted leather, scattered and slightly reeking of sulfur and brimstone.

Humans

Humans rarely die celestially on the corporeal plane: when one does, the nearest concave surface will be filled with a few ounces of clear, salty liquid. If unnoticed, this liquid will evaporate within a day.

Saints

A small urn or bag, full of a fine gray ash: the outside will have the sigil of the Saint's Superior inscribed upon it.

Undead

Nothing. Nothing at all.
